New Classes and Programs

Design Your Own Thicket Quilt

To be announced

Join Debbie as she walks you through the steps required to create your own unique quilt using panels from the Thicket Critter collection. Learn to draft your own layout, discuss techniques required to complete the various sized blocks, including “slab blocks” and easy foundation paper piecing (FPP). Several FPP patterns will be provided for your personal use. Finished size of your quilt is up to you (display quilt measures 40” x 52”).

Ponderosa Pinecone Pin Cushion

Sashiko

Learn the basics of this traditional Japanese technique, a hand-done, embroidery-style stitch. You will
work on a pre-printed fabric panel while you become familiar with the stitch. Britta will then show you
different ways of transferring a pattern on to your own fabric piece, as well as how to stitch from the
back of your work.

Barnyard Queen

Ann Shaw has been trained by Ruth McDowell, the now-retired master of this freezer paper piecing
technique. Ann’s patterns are bold and unique, abstract pictorial designs. Using a freezer-paper method
and straight-line pattern, learn the precise application. Combine bold prints and interesting
backgrounds to create your own unique Barnyard Queen.

Be Square

This fun quilt to make would be classified as a “fun—improvisational” technique! The unusual way the
squares are cut creates a unique design for each set of blocks. A favourite colour selection as well as
a sharp rotary cutter, ruler and an adventurous attitude is all that is needed to conquer this pattern!

It’s A Wrap

Design fantastic containers—bowls, baskets and handbags or make chair pads, trivets or placemats. Fabric
strips are wrapped around cotton clothesline, coiled into the desired shape and secured with machine
stitching. Your machine must have straight and zig-zag capabilities. Come join the fun!

Fabric Pottery

Shaped like pottery but supple like fabric, each project is a visual and tactile treat! Easy As ABC

The Gypsy Wife Quilt

Slow Stitch Monday

Need to slow down after a busy weekend? Do you have some hand work projects on the go? Join Patti and other like-minded friends on Mondays for a cuppa tea or coffee while we stitch the day away. This day has one very strict rule: NO SEWING MACHINES ALLOWED! Bring anything that can be worked on with your hands, eg. binding, hand applique, English paper piecing, knitting/crocheting, etc.

Rotary Cutting Basics + More

Tuesday, February 20, 2018

9-4pm

Learn basic rotary cutting techniques as well as that perfect 1/4” seam allowance and proper pressing
methods to start your quilting journey in the right direction. The basic rotary cutting skills of
safety, maintenance and handling of the Olfa cutter, mat and Omnigrid rulers will be covered as you
learn to measure and cut geometric shapes and strips quickly, accurately and safely with no templates.
With a few simple exercises, you will find your perfect 1/4” seam allowance, crucial for accurate
piecing and quilt construction. Finally, you will learn proper pressing techniques which will help you
achieve those “perfect” blocks we all aim for!

Primarily Patchwork—Block Construction

This sampler-style quilt top is an excellent course for the beginning quilter or those wanting to update
their quilting skills. Use the rotary cutter to practice accurate cutting, sewing a perfect ¼” seam
allowance and proper pressing techniques. You will receive guidance from your instructor to build skill
and confidence in making your quilt blocks. Some homework is required. Instructions included to complete
12 blocks.

Primarily Patchwork—Quilt Construction

To be announced

Learn to accurately square up your quilt blocks and to add sashing and borders without puckers. Choose
from a straight set or diagonal set and take on the added challenge of mitered corners! Batting types
for your particular project will be discussed. You will complete the course with your quilt layered,
basted and ready for quilting. Applies to six block quilts only. Some homework will be required.

Foundation Paper Piecing

Sometimes called “foundation piecing” or “paper piecing”, this technique consists of sewing pieces of fabric on to a paper foundation, thereby allowing the quilter to construct complicated patterns easily and accurately. If you love long, slender, pointy spikes with precise piecing, you will discover how quickly you will be able to create magic with this technique.

Documentation of your quilt is so important for future generations and may increase the value of your work! Learn to make easy and necessary labels for your quilts. Pigma pen, photo transfer and computer printed techniques will be covered. Finish your quilt properly with a hanging sleeve and learn about the care and storage of your finished quilt.

Hand Quilting

Other Information

Quilting by Degree Program and Grad Club

Our Quilting by Degree Program consists of in-depth classes, providing a total of 78 hours of expert instruction in quilt making basics. Each class taken is recorded in a computer database for each participant. These records are kept on file until completion of the full degree program, with no time constraints.
After completion of the Quilting by Degree program, you will be invited to attend Grad Club meetings. Each Grad Club event is a visual potpourri packed with ideas to inspire you; Show and Tell, the featured graduate, ‘how-to’ presentations, ‘what’s new’ at Earthly Goods, connections to our sewing roots and much more! Karen and Wanda always have something exciting and inspiring to share!
Congratulations to our newest Graduates, Gena Bouwmeester, Benjamin Evans, Corey Ralph, Lorraine Weyermann, Mary Ann Fehr, Kathy Strawson and Brenda Hawley. This brings our total number of graduates is 707!
Next Grad Club Meeting: Thursday, September 21, 1-4pm. Bring your Show & Tell (or what you’re working on) and be prepared to inspire each other!

  • Class fees are required at time of registration; classes are filled on a first-come basis with full payment
  • Classes will be cancelled and a full refund issued if insufficient registration
    No refunds, credits or class transfers. If you are unable to attend you may send someone in your place
  • Material/preparation sheets are to be picked up prior to class date; we would be happy to email your supply list upon registration
  • Materials must be purchased before class; Earthly Goods quality fabrics and notions are preferred
    Classes begin on time, please come prepared
  • Our location is wheelchair accessible with no stairs
  • Due to allergies, please refrain from wearing perfume or scented products in class
